As part of an effort to find up to $57 million for Memphis City Schools, all of the city's division directors were required to send Mayor A C Wharton recommendations for cutting 25 percent of their budgets. The proposals were due by the end of business Thursday.

"I recognize that this exercise is a daunting task, and may require you to consider personnel dismissals and/or furloughs," said George Little, the city's chief administrative officer, in a memo sent to directors Thursday.
