Richard Lee Winchester, who served as Shelby County Board of Education attorney during desegregation in the 1960s, knew how to make people feel at ease.

"To treat everybody with dignity and respect, regardless of race, creed, or belief, that was his greatest achievement," said Mr. Winchester's son, Rick Winchester of Cordova, also a local attorney.
