State Budget Trims Education -- New Legislature May Alter Spending Proposal in 2012

JACKSON - Though likely different from what returning legislators will approve after the first of the year, Mississippi legislative leaders on Tuesday proposed a $5.39 billion budget for fiscal 2013 that would slightly cut state education funding and reduce spending at the Institutions of Higher Learning by 1.9 percent.

Legislative Budget Committee members proposed a spending plan that is $127.4 million less - about 0.6 percent - than the state is projected to spend in the 2012 fiscal year, which ends June 30.
