The DeSoto Board of Supervisors on Monday approved a county emergency proclamation due to Mississippi River-related flooding, following up on their declaration May 2 after damage to roads and dozens of homes and businesses from days of heavy rains in April.

The panel also approved a contractor's bid of $314,889 - the lowest of three opened just an hour earlier - to rush repairs to reopen Holly Springs Road east of Hernando. The worst-hit section of the east-west artery linking the county seat to Marshall County is between Johnston and Smith roads, where entire lanes are gouged out in some areas; the road has been shut for three weeks.
