Shirley Farnsworth had been through two bouts of cancer when she learned about the R.A. Bloch Cancer Foundation and its sponsorship of parks dedicated to cancer survivors, their families and friends.

Farnsworth telephoned the foundation in 1995, asking about the possibility of a Memphis park. Twelve years and more than $1 million later, the Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Survivors Park is preparing to open next week as the 23rd such park in the nation.
