While preparing for this week's sentencing of Dale Mardis in the 2001 murder of code enforcement inspector Mickey Wright, federal authorities inadvertently may have solved another murder not even on their radar.

A witness in the Mardis case told investigators Thursday afternoon that Mardis, a former gun dealer, also killed a former Memphis psychologist in 1998 by beating him to death with a hammer and then burning the body in Mississippi, just as he did Wright's three years later.
