Walter Lanier "Red" Barber was born to a railroad engineer and a schoolteacher in Columbus, Miss., in 1908. A few facts:

His family moved to Sanford, Fla., in 1918. In 1929, he enrolled at the University of Florida, majoring in education. Barber filled in for a professor who failed to show up for a radio broadcast on the university station, and decided to switch careers. He became station director and chief announcer.
