In one of the most notable trade deals of the Bush administration, U.S. airlines got the OK Wednesday to ramp up service to China in unprecedented levels, handing local carriers Northwest Airlines and FedEx Corp. gains and paving the way for a day when there will be no limits.

In a deal negotiated in Washington between Chinese officials and the Department of Transportation, the number of daily passenger flights between the United States and China will more than double by 2012, giving U.S. carriers access to one of the fastest-growing markets in the world.
