The word "brilliant" is too often loosely applied to images and ideas with little shine. Properly, the adjective should be reserved for visually scintillating material - such as real diamonds and American brilliant cut glass.

"Brilliant by Design: Masterpieces of American Cut Glass, 1880- 1915," opening Sunday at Dixon Gallery and Gardens, brings together around 175 examples of this country's best and brightest from regional collections. Local expert and collector Dr. Thomas Fortner has selected and installed the dazzling material on view through July 27.
