A Push for Development Outside Poplar Corridor Is Essential

Summary


In most cities, there are the "haves" and the "have nots," but in Memphis most of the fortunate have zero social exposure to those who are less fortunate. You can apply this logic to our differences over race, as well.

In part, this is because the city's development patterns have tended to divide us. For example, I look at the Poplar Avenue corridor as the city's equator, dividing our city in two for at least a generation. If you were to ask our residents how many of them spend their time traveling east and west in our city and county, the numbers are overwhelmingly strong. There are some who never have to leave a half-mile radius of Poplar Avenue for work, school and social activities.
