LOURDES, France - Pope Benedict XVI knelt and prayed Saturday during his pilgrimage to the shrine at Lourdes, a craggy grotto that he calls a "citadel of life and of hope" and that draws millions of pilgrims each year seeking strength and miracle cures.

Benedict flew to Lourdes, in the Pyrenees foothills in southwest France, after saying an outdoor Mass in Paris earlier Saturday, attended by more than a quarter million Roman Catholics.
