Summary


"Cars" never was one of my favorite Pixar films, possibly because I can't help thinking the premise is more disturbing than cute - more suggestive of "Maximum Overdrive"-era Stephen King than of Walt Disney or Thomas the Train Engine.

The idea of a world clearly constructed by and for people yet devoid of all "life" except for sentient cars with morphing facial features suggests the aftermath of some sort of rise-of-the- machines apocalypse, as if a government artificial-intelligence experiment had gone haywire and resulted in the extinction of the human race. Imagine if the characters in "Toy Story" capered about in a land similarly empty of flesh-and-blood creatures. Wouldn't you eye Woody and Buzz with suspicion and ask: What have you done with the people?
