The state Education Department is backing Shelby County Schools' legal action to try to stop the County Commission from appointing an "illegitimate" 25-member unified school board.
In a memorandum filed Wednesday on the suburban system's federal school merger lawsuit, Tennessee Department of Education officials asked a judge to grant a preliminary injunction requested this week by SCS.
