In response to a recent Forbes magazine article Mayor A C Wharton once again became a "public defender" in Memphis, this time defending the city's livability. Our mayor is to be applauded for his open letter to Steve Forbes. Reminding us of many reasons to be justifiably proud, the mayor continues to promote "One Memphis" and seeks to help the city improve its quality of life.

Most leaders realize their ability to effect change is directly related to involving many others in the work of building community. To pull together as One Memphis we must focus on what has to be done to become an increasingly attractive place to live, work and play. I look forward to the day we know we are becoming the place we long to be. I also sense we can reach a positive tipping point in our community more quickly than many imagine and most believe.
