Just about every Wednesday for the past 19 years, Paul Ireland and a group of friends have gathered near the tennis courts at Freeman Park in Bartlett at 6:30 p.m. for a run of 4 to 6 miles in the surrounding neighborhood.

Weather isn't a factor. "We run no matter what," says Ireland, the chief facilitator for the Bartlett runners, who number about 40 but would be happy to expand. New runners are always welcome.

The Bartlett group and many others in the area will be among the celebrants of the first National Running Day, which is set for Wednesday .

The organizers, a coalition that includes USA Track & Field, Running USA and the New York Road Runners, have a simple message: Running is a healthful, easy and accessible form of exercise.
