Last month, as Memphian Bryan Powell participated in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's "Ride to Cure Diabetes," a one-day, 106-mile trek across Death Valley in California, he never had to look far for inspiration.

"Over a third of the riders had type 1 diabetes, from teenagers to people in their 60s," said Powell, 26, a territory manager and consultant for Medtronic Diabetes.
