Gone, but not forgotten: When Flower Lake near Clayton, began to be missing from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks' weekly fishing report, Wood Stevens of Olive Branch says he drove to the lake to see what was going on. What he saw wasn't what he wanted to see - a yellow rope, he says, was stretched across the road at the top of the levee spur that normally leads to the lake's bait shop. He says there was a sign that read: "No trespassing; prosecution by penalty of law," or something to that effect. Former Memphian Ron Garavelli, who is the state agency's director of fisheries, confirmed that the popular lake is no longer open to the public. "Landowners closed the ramp," Garavelli says. "It was never public property. Tunica Lake is the same. If landowners decide to close their access we lose another great fishing hole." Garavelli says the DWFP has "started to look at these lakes and are trying to find land to purchase for public access." Stevens says he has been fishing Flower Lake for 40-plus years. "I am very disappointed to see that something like this can happen," he says. "My father took me there. I took my children there and I was looking forward to taking my grandsons there this year."See the full content of this document
