Memorial Day Events

Summary


Memphis National Cemetery: The Memorial Day program will begin at 2 p.m. today with a musical prelude from the Bartlett Community Band. The posting of colors by the Marine Corps League will be followed by the national anthem performed by Anita Berry, and the Pledge of Allegiance. Rev. Robert Clark Jr. of Calvary Longview United Methodist Church will give the invocation. The ceremony will end with a gun salute and taps, the retiring of colors and the Memorial Flag, and a benediction. There will also be a moment of silence to honor all veterans.

West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery: The program will begin at 11 a.m. Monday. Music will be provided by the Navy Band from Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington. There will be a salute by the Tennessee Army National Guard and a flyover by jets from Columbus (Miss.) Air Force Base. The Pledge of Allegiance will be led by Eagle Scouts. Eileen Stern with the Gold Star Mothers will speak. Stern's son, Marine 1st Lt. Andrew Stern, was killed Sept. 16, 2004, when he threw himself in front of an improvised explosive device to protect another Marine in Iraq. The program is hosted by the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery Support Group and Boy Scouts of America, Chickasaw Council, Eastern District.
