"The Romance of Loneliness" takes place over 24 hours and was shot in 19 days, but its compact narrative and brisk production schedule are misleading: The intimate yet ambitious movie represents a five-years-in-the-making passion project for its co-directors, Sarah Ledbetter and Matteo Servente of Memphis.

"We've sacrificed practically everything we have for this," said Ledbetter, 35, a dancer, actor, St. Mary's Episcopal School graduate and Northwestern University performance studies major who was living in New York when the shock of 9/11 filled her with a sense of urgency and inspired her to explore a risky new avenue of artistic expression: filmmaking.
