Kudzu Stages Ambitious and Comedic 'Noises Off'

Summary


It's hard not to imagine that when celebrated English writer Michael Frayn penned his 1982 play-within-a-play "Noises Off," he didn't also envision the twisted comedic possibilities, invisible to most audiences, inherent in its actual staging.

Originally produced in London, "Noises Off" tells the tale of a bedraggled theater troupe trying to mount a production of "Nothing On," a fictitious English sex farce set in a country home with a ridiculous plot that hinges on a plate of sardines and an Arab sheik. The three acts of "Noises Off" capture the troupe performing the same act of "Nothing On" during different stages of the run: rehearsals, a mid-tour matinee, and the calamitous final performance in which the "real-life" backstage farce, centered on the affairs and foibles of the cast and crew, clashes headlong into the theatrical one.
