Our daughter was only 12 when we knew something was wrong, very wrong. What we didn't know was that she was starving to death.

What we learned then was that Julie Kate had juvenile diabetes and my wife, Benlyn, and I had no idea what to expect. But learning came quickly. Our daughter's immune system had destroyed the insulin- producing cells embedded in her pancreas. Without insulin, we were told, the natural sugars from the food she eats - the natural sugars that normally nourished her body - simply became useless. Regardless of the amount of food she ate, none of its nourishment got into her cells. In other words, she was starving to death.
