The line for the retirement celebration wrapped around the room like a ribbon hugging a cherished present. Faculty and staff from multiple departments across the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital campus showed up to honor a woman who has been a dedicated nurse for 40 years.

In 1971, St. Jude was a one-story, star-shaped building not yet 10 years old. It was at this new hospital that nurse Pat Pitman would spend the next four decades. "I worked in patient care for about 20 years and then as a patient support specialist, making sure my colleagues and fellow nurses were well-equipped to do their important jobs," Pitman said.
