Hoping to head off potential scams, Shelby County officials on Thursday began requiring contractors and volunteers conducting flood- related repairs to get photo identification cards proving they're legit.
The initiative, announced by county Mayor Mark Luttrell, is intended to let residents know if the contractor they're hiring has registered with the Office of Preparedness and agreed to follow certain guidelines.
