The Memphis City Council has approved the installation of automated cameras at 10 accident-prone intersections on city streets to identify and ticket motorists who run red lights. Several other cities in Tennessee, including Germantown, already use red-light cameras, and supporters say they reduce the number and severity of accidents at intersections where they are in use. But red-light cameras have sparked controversy in some other locations; the state of Mississippi, for example, has banned their use.
