When Jeff Nesin left Memphis this month, he took with him a love of the city and its culture, a sense of accomplishment gained after 19 years as president of Memphis College of Art - and a penchant for bow ties.

"I did not wear bow ties before coming down here," Nesin, 64, said during an interview before packing up his office at the college in Overton Park and wearing a neon pink bow tie with tiny white dots. He and his wife, Diane, are returning to their native New York, where Nesin will take the post of provost at the School of Visual Arts. Before he came to Memphis, he had worked at SVA for 17 years, as fine arts adviser to the president and teaching courses in the history of American popular music. This return to New York, then, is a double homecoming.
