Under sunny skies and pine trees that swayed in the warm breeze, Danny Irby plopped a turkey on the smoker and settled in for a grill- out - undeterred by floodwaters inching up to his mobile home and nearby crews shutting off utilities.

"Until they tell me I've got to go, or until water gets in my house, I'm staying," Irby, 54, said Thursday evening as he tended the grill and visited with friends.
