The Dalai Lama, spiritual leader and head of the government-in- exile of Tibet, will receive the annual International Freedom Award from the National Civil Rights Museum on Sept. 23.

The 14th Dalai Lama is the first to have traveled to the West and will be honored in a special ceremony in the Grand Ballroom of The Peabody. The museum announced the award Thursday along with its annual Legacy Award, which will go to Julius "Dr. J." Erving, the basketball superstar known for his humanitarian, business and philanthropic efforts.
