Summary


Despite intermittent rain and a tornado watch, unionized Memphis sanitation workers marked the 43rd anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s murder by reprising the famous 1968 march to City Hall.

Bolstered by members of other unions, they set off Monday morning from the headquarters of the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees Local 1733 on Beale Street, following a banner that read "The Struggle Continues." About 1,000 workers, community activists and students shouted repeatedly in a rhythm set down by the Fairley High School marching band: "This is what democracy looks like."
