At 34, Van Turner has called Atlanta and Tsuru, Japan, home. But after graduating magma cum laude from Morehouse College and teaching English to Japanese students abroad, Turner decided to return to Tennessee and attend the University of Tennessee College of Law.

In 2002, with his law degree in hand, Turner circled back to his hometown of Memphis to take a clerkship for Samuel "Hardy" Mays Jr., a federal trial judge.
