Ex-Dean Led Law School Move -- Shift to Downtown

Jim Smoot, the man responsible for the Herculean task of moving the University of Memphis' law school from its dilapidated spot on Central Avenue to the historic former Customs House on Front Street, died early Tuesday morning of complications related to heart trouble. He would have celebrated his 65th birthday on July 21.

A professor at the law school since 1990, Mr. Smoot served as the school's dean from 2004 to 2008. A widower who never had children, he is survived by his Harlequin Great Dane, Horatio, who was given over to a family in Nashville in May, when it became clear Mr. Smoot could no longer care for him.
