Diuretic May Affect Bones -- Study: Medication Puts Women at Risk

Summary


New research that included Mid-South volunteers suggests extended use of certain blood pressure medicines leaves older women at an increased risk for broken bones.

Women who took medications known as loop diuretics for three or more years were at a 16 percent increased risk of suffering a broken bone, when compared with similar women who had not taken the drug, said Dr. Karen Johnson, a University of Tennessee Health Science Center professor of preventive medicine. Johnson directed the study's Memphis arm, which included about 3,000 local women.
