OXFORD - DeSoto County schools received a 5.5 percent spending increase for the 2010 school year over last year's budget while some state departments - public safety and mental health among others - absorbed funding cuts.

That's good news for the state's largest school system, which faces crowding problems and has schools under construction and more on the drawing board.
