Comment of the Week / We Are All in This Together

Summary

Community is one of the primary attributes and benefits of being people of faith. Over most of the past 15 years, I have had the pleasure of being a part of the distribution of kosher foods in Memphis. Pesach (Passover) displays of special cakes, cookies, candies and matzos made late winter and early spring a very busy time. I was honored to play a small role in the celebration and remembrance of Passover and the Seder. Not being Jewish, I was somewhat taken aback by the amount of preparation and hard work involved in observing this most important holiday. And it appeared to fall mainly to women to pull it all together.

To make a long story short, I believe we are all in this together: women and men, Christians and Jews, workers and customers. Community is worth the effort needed to bring it to fruition. So next week, when you see the displays of matzos, cakes, grape juice and candies going up, build community and say hello to the people helping to make this year's celebration. That little red-haired lady has been working very hard and will be working even harder over these next weeks. Build some community and tell her thanks. Her name is Gail.
