Early in his career as a neurosurgeon, Dee Canale took an interest in the history of surgery and medicine. He began to collect old medical books, and became intrigued by the antiquated practice of bloodletting.

During the 1970s, when Canale visited medical history museums in England and other European countries, he often came across bleeding bowls. Also called barber bowls, they were used by barber surgeons - medical practitioners of the Middle Ages - to shave clients and also to collect blood during the bloodletting process.
