Summary

SOFTBALL: Cat Osterman pitched a no-hitter, Crystl Bustos belted a two-run homer and the Americans extended their win streak inside the rings to 16 straight with a 3-0 win over Australia. Osterman struck out 13, and walked two. Natasha Watley hit an RBI single to snap a scoreless tie in the fifth, and Bustos connected for her 10th Olympic homer in the sixth.

TENNIS: Signaling his recent tailspin may be over, Roger Federer avenged a defeat four years ago at the Olympics by beating Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 7-6 (4), to reach the quarterfinals. Federer will next face No. 8 James Blake, who advanced by beating No. 10 Gilles Simon of France, 6-4, 6-2. Blake is the lone U.S. man to survive the first round. Rafael Nadal also advanced, beating Igor Andreev of Russia, 6-4, 6-2. Venus and Serena Williams won to remain on course for a sibling showdown in the final Saturday. Serena beat 18-year-old Alize Cornet of France, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Venus downed Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, 6-3, 6-2.
