The city of Memphis has asked former mayor Willie Herenton to return several thousand dollars the city paid for his criminal defense.

City Atty. Herman Morris said Friday that he has asked Herenton and his attorney, Robert Spence, to return roughly $10,000 out of a total of $55,734.47 former city attorney Elbert Jefferson paid Spence for Herenton's defense. The payment, made just days before the former mayor left office last year, involved a federal grand jury investigation.
