After a lengthy debate stretched across two meetings, the Metropolitan Government Charter Commission recommended Thursday that the chief law enforcement officer in a proposed consolidated government be a police director appointed by the metro mayor, rather than the elected sheriff.

The decision came on an 8-2 vote with Commissioner J.W. Gibson II abstaining. The vote, a recommendation to the writers of the charter document, also included caveats where the sheriff would have a voice in the selection of the police leader, and the consolidated legislative body also would be involved in the confirmation.
