Shelby County, a crossroads for drug dealers in the United States since at least the 1930s, was designated Monday as a federal High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, tying the county into a formal network aimed at curtailing the flow of illegal drugs nationally.

The designation makes Memphis one of 28 HIDTAs in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Sheriff Mark Luttrell and Asst. U.S. Atty. Larry Laurenzi had campaigned for the designation earlier this year, asking to join the Gulf Coast HIDTA, which Luttrell said includes Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, parts of Arkansas and, now, Shelby County.
