The Commercial Appeal (2007-Current)
A Camp for Every Child - Traditional, Specialty, and Special Needs - -
(Ran in DeSoto Appeal) Choices abound when it comes to camp programs. One may highlight a wide variety of activities geared to campers of all ages and skill levels, others, because of their setting and expertise, may concentrate on one or two activities while providing traditional activities as well. Parents of children with special needs are pleased to learn about the range of camp activities that help kids be kids first.
Finding the Right Camp for Your Child
With a little help from the American Camp Association, here's some sound advice to help parents sort through the choices and benefits that camp delivers. How to Decide When Your Child is Ready for Camp
Improve Skills, Land a Scholarship
If you are a girl basketball player, going to a summer camp to improve your skills is very important. Who knows, the experience might even help you land an athletic scholarship. Parents and students are looking for ways to pay for the rising costs of higher education. Basketball is a means for exercise, for extra-curricular activities in school, and for teaching and learning team work. However, basketball can also be a means for getting a free education.

Strategies for Saving Money When Sending Kids to Camp
LESS IS MORE Day camps usually cost considerably less than overnight camps. Check whether the camp offers shorter, cheaper sessions, too.
Being a Camp Counselor Is Fun and Rewarding
I have been a Singleton Community Center Summer Camp counselor for the past four years. I have worked with and grown to care for many children throughout my summers at camp. My experience as a counselor has been very rewarding. We have tons of fun; playing crazy ball, kickball and other fun games. I have gotten to work with great kids and great staff members at Singleton Community Center Summer Camp in Bartlett. We enjoy theme weeks where the kids and counselors get to dance, play games and e...
Building Lasting Memories -- Summer Camp Allows Kids to Have Adventures and Gain Independence
As the end of the school year steadily approaches, parents everywhere are beginning to think about summer programs. My boys, ages 4 and 6, have never been to camp. (Their school offers a summer program.) My oldest, Satchel, really wanted to go to the Rhodes soccer camp last year, but when he found out that his younger brother, Jiro, wasn't old enough to go, too, he changed his mind. I can't blame Satchel for not wanting to go alone. I am a twin, and growing up, I liked knowing that whatever I...

Hoops Camp Teaches Skills and Confidence
My favorite camp I've ever been to is Terry Tippett's basketball camp. Terry Tippett is the basketball coach at Evangelical Christian School and is one of the winningest coaches in the area. The camp was for boys in third grade through fifth grade. The camp helpers were players from the ECS varsity team. That was one of the best parts about it.
Sparking Curiosity -- Day Camp Helps Girls Explore Activities, Build Friendships
Last summer, SPARK Summer Day Camp "sparked" the lives of many young girls, as it sharpened their intellectual curiosity, cultivated their artistic expression, and taught girls to accept responsibility for their physical well-being. Every morning, we started the day singing fun camp songs and dancing to the music. Each day brought a new adventure from riding horses to canoeing in Hutchison's campus lake, cooking, decorating and participating in a Madhatter Tea Party, swimming in Hutchison's c...
Help Kids Get Over Anxiety of Being Away From Home for the First Time --
(Ran in DeSoto Appeal) Sending your child away to camp for the first time is a major milestone for most families, one that is often marked by excitement, anticipation, and perhaps even some anxiety.
The soccer camp at Rhodes College, the Above and Beyond Soccer Academy, is something that I'll always remember. I had played church/ school league soccer in both the spring and the fall, but never had any real training, aside from the coaching received during regular team practices. At the soccer camp at Rhodes, I was still taught as part of a team, but this time there was more opportunity to receive individual instruction to really develop the basic techniques needed to be a skilled soccer p...
