Firm Files Site Plan in Bartlett -- Independent Living Facility Would Be First of Its Kind in Suburb

A Nebraska-based company wants to build a 130-unit adult independent living facility at Kirby-Whitten and Summer in Bartlett. Cameron General Contractors of Lincoln, Neb., filed the site plan and special use application earlier this week. The matter is tentatively scheduled for consideration at the July 7 Bartlett Planning Commission meeting.

Early Thursday morning, visitors to the parking lot of Bartlett Elementary would have a hard time finding a spot between the bomb squad truck, an ambulance, field vans and dozens of patrol cars. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office conducted its fourth "active shooter" training exercise meant to teach school resource officers, often the first people on a scene, how to handle a shooting.

Player Collapses During Game -- Fayette-Ware's Lewis Dies at Age 16

Fayette-Ware High School student Anfernee Lewis died doing what he loved Tuesday when he collapsed on a basketball court in Jackson, Tenn. Lewis had just entered a summer camp game at South Side High School when he fell to the floor while his teammate was shooting a free throw. He was still breathing when he was taken to a Jackson hospital but was pronounced dead a few hours later. He was 16.
