LET'S START with the obvious: Kids can't learn if they don't feel safe. It's darned hard to concentrate on a math problem if you're worried about getting shot at recess.
So that's what the Germantown Centre was. The suburb's reputation as a fitness-friendly place by Shelby County standards will surely be enhanced by new efforts to lure people into what has been renamed, helpfully, the Germantown Athletic Club.
Put it on taxpayers' tab I'm guessing Shelby County Commissioner Henri Brooks wanted to save herself the $300 the Pink Palace was going to charge her and have a celebration at the expense of local taxpayers (Dec. 27 article, "Win for Kwanzaa").
Outgoing Council Members May Not Be Done
Today is the final day in office for nine of the Memphis City Council's 13 members. Their replacements are scheduled to be sworn in on Tuesday, putting an official stamp on the biggest turnover in the city's elected leadership in 40 years.
